Ring | Daniela Orvin | Video Installation
A video triptych shot in winter 2013 in Berlin, in and around the S-Bahn train that circles the city centre in a ring. The work is in three parts and each one of them refers poetically to the notion of ego.
"The Ego which is the center of the consciousness according karl Jung is usually sketched as
a dot sounded by a circle, ring. Therefor according to my interpretation everything outside the ring is outside the Ego and has no Ego.
The first and central Video presents an edited journey I made traveling by the Berliner S-Bahn train called Ring which is circling the city. all areas which are inside the circle of the tracks of this train are considered as good and in demand. All areas outside the "Ring" are considers as less popular or good.
The 1:50 min Journey- a typical duration of traveling from station to station- shows the views which can be seen from the train's window, this view is already outside the border of
the Ring which means outside of the Ego.
The song which accompany this video is a recording of one musician/ beggar (an anti-Ego
as well ) who was singing in one point of my journey. This action of singing and asking for
money while traveling by S/ U bahn is typical and standard in Berlin. the lyrics of the song
talk about the frustration of an employee who works 40 hours a week and about the fact an employee can be fired and changed by an employer at any given time.
The second Video is a slowed looped frame of snow falling from the cloudy Berlin sky.
Snow- white and neutral creates a layer that rests of curves and roads and neutralizes sounds and echoes of the city therefor is an anti-thesis to the City Ego. the snowflakes look more as a disturbance or dirt. Another emphasis of the Anti- Ego.
The third video connects and relates to the 2 other videos; it was shot in one of the stations
on the Ring route and shows snowflakes and the flickering of a train traffic light in a loop.
The loops are also related to the exhibition theme No Ego as Ego represents in my eyes extreme situations such as up and down and a loop is softened without any edges."
