Musrara Modern Ensemble of is an instrumental ensemble of contemporary music, specializing in canonical musical works from the second half of the 20th century and the 21st century. The ensemble is proud to open the 2023 Musrara Mix with Attica – Frederic Rzewski’s 1971 piece for indeterminate number of instruments. The unorthodox work is Rzewski’s response to the famous revolt in the American prison, a seminal moment in the history of the civil rights movement, exemplifying how composers of the second half of the 20th century used innovative forms and techniques as part of their political and social activism. More than fifty years later, this topic remains more relevant than ever.
