Margarete | Janek Turkowski | Performance
(part of TRAFO - Centre for Contemporary Arts in Szczecin, Poland program)
In 2008, Janek Turkowski accidentally came across a few amateur films made by a German woman. Just a normal, ordinary woman. Years earlier he had become fascinated by the phenomenon of ‘intimate’ confessions and diaries on internet. The sudden advent of blogs called to mind the silva rerum (Latin for ‘forest of objects’), a popular literary genre in sixteenth-century Poland. At that time, the wealthy aristocracy amassed extensive collections of live-written texts on various themes. Such collections offered a treasure chest of information, documenting the everyday life of the author. Janek revived the genre in a new form. Kneeling on a comfortable crochet blanket he presents the flickering 8-mm films of Margarete and recounts the underlying story. A trace of (the beauty of) the past settles upon us in all its moving simplicity.
